Shenandoah map: the roads, gates and camps
Three named routes make up the 171 km of game-viewing road inside Shenandoah. All three are surfaced.
Four entrances let you in: Front Royal Entrance, Thornton Gap Entrance, Swift Run Gap Entrance and Rockfish Gap Entrance. Which one you use decides your first hour, because the distance from each gate to the best early roads is not the same.
Inside there are four camps and lodges: Big Meadows Campground, Loft Mountain Campground, Mathews Arm Campground and Lewis Mountain Campground. Of those, every one takes campers and three have a shop. There are also four picnic sites where you may legally leave the vehicle.
The animals our road data flags most often here are black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and bobcat. The route that scores highest of all is Skyline Drive (South District) over its 64.1 km, and that is where we would send you first.
What the paper map at the gate will not tell you is which of those three routes is worth your morning. Shenandoah is essentially one road. Skyline Drive runs 169 kilometres along the crest of the Blue Ridge from Front Royal to Rockfish Gap, and 75 overlooks are spaced along it — the whole park is arranged around that single line.
It also carries one of the densest black bear populations in the eastern United States, and white-tailed deer are so used to traffic in Big Meadows that they graze beside the road. The speed limit is 35 mph for good reason.

How likely are you to see a bear?
Fairly likely in spring and summer. Shenandoah has one of the densest black bear populations in the eastern United States and they are often visible from the drive.
When is the autumn colour?
Mid to late October in most years. It is also the busiest period of the year and the entrances can back up.
Does Skyline Drive close in winter?
Sections close during ice and snow, and the whole drive can shut at short notice. It reopens as soon as conditions allow.
